Agatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun

===============================================================================
Agatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun
===============================================================================

A word of warning - this walk-through contains many spoilers, but I am trying
to label everything as clearly as possible so that game players can, hopefully,
locate the section where they seem to be stuck without having to read the
entire walkthrough.

First, a little explanation about how things will be phrased during the game -
you will be playing this game as Hastings directing Poirot's movements and I
will be phrasing all of the descriptions from his point of view.
If I say something is to your right (or left), it refers to HIS perspective.
If he is facing away from you it'll also be to your right, but if he is facing
you, it'll be his right, your left (I hope this isn't too confusing - it just
seemed like the easiest way to handle it).

To shorten this walkthrough a little, when you move between the island and
town and back, I will tell you where you have to go at the beginning of that
section then tell you where to go, who to talk to and what to get for each
place individually. If there is something that you need to do with an item
right then, I will include that, otherwise, I'll wait until you need to use
that item. If I say talk to someone, click on every statement or question that
is listed in the dialog box.

For most conversations, I'll let them explain themselves, except for the ones
where you are given options about what to say or ask a certain character.
For those, I will give you the correct selection.

Second, this is not necessarily a “linear” game. There are some things that
have to be done before the game will move on to the next act, but there are a
few things (not many) that can be done later.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There have also been problems with "white-out" while playing the game. In my
case, the problem usually occurred when I was trying to go along the cliffside
path between the Bathing Beach and the Monastery Ruins. I found that the game
would start acting up before the white-out - slow fade ins and outs, sluggish
cursor - so I would save my game at that point and exit the program for a few
minutes, then when I went back to it, it would be alright for a while and I
wouldn't have to try to find things to save my game in white-out conditions.

*** Cursor Descriptions ***
This game is entirely mouse controlled - point and click.
At the top of the screen you will find a drop-down menu of a sort.

*** Neutral Cursor - indicating no specific action necessary

*** Back Cursor - curved arrow indicating that you can back out of a close-up
view.

*** Speech Cursor - a mouth indicating that you can speak (or at least attempt
to speak) to another character.

*** Use Cursor - a gear indicating that you may 'use' an item that you have in
your inventory.

*** Walk Cursor - Poirot's legs indicate you may move in that direction.
A double-click on the left mouse button will help to
transition faster between scenes.

*** View Cursor - an eye indicating that you can move in for a closer view of
an area or item.

*** Eavesdrop Cursor - an ear indicating that you may eavesdrop on a
conversation.

*** Shadow Cursor - a shadow outline indicating that you may follow that person
by clicking the left mouse button. Following is automatic
and only lasts a short time.

*** Door Cursor - a doorknob indicating that you may enter a door if it is
unlocked.

*** Take Cursor - a hand indicating that you may pick something up and add it
to your inventory.

===============================================================================
*** Drop-down Selection ***
At the top of the screen there is a drop-down bar with five windows on it.
Each window has a picture that indicates what it is -

*** First Window - a picture of the Smuggler's Inn Tower Room - clicking on it
will take you out to the main menus to save or load a game,
change game settings or exit the game.

*** Second Window - a picture of Hastings, if you are in Poirot's office, and
clicking on it will take you back to the Poirot's room on
the island, or a picture of Poirot if you're on the island
and want to go back to his office before the end of an act
to get a hint from the “Finger of Suspicion”.

*** Third Window - a picture of a valise. This is your inventory. You can click
on it or just click the right mouse button to open it up.
To look closer at anything you've picked up, double click on
it and it will open a window that shows it in more detail
with a little explanation. Some items can be examined even
by clicking the Magnifying Glass Button on the bottom right.

*** Fourth Window - a picture of a notebook. This holds Poirot's instructions,
information you gather on your suspects, documents and your
stopwatch timings.

*** Fifth Window - a picture of a stopwatch. If Poirot mentions that a location
would be a good place to do a stopwatch timing from there to
Cutter's Cove, click on it. The timing is done automatically
and recorded in your notebook. If you look at your stopwatch
timings in your notebook and see 'TBD' (to be determined),
you didn't do it when Poirot mentioned it and you still need
to go back to that place and do the timing.

(Even though you don't HAVE to do the timings exactly WHEN Poirot says that it
would be a good time, it could cause problems later on if they haven't been
done. My conclusion - it's best to do the timings when Poirot says that it
would be a good time to do them.)

===============================================================================
*** To Use the "Finger of Suspicion" ***
If you're stuck and want to try to work it out on your own go back to Poirot's
office and click on the Finger of Suspicion sitting on his desk.

It will go into a close-up of the Finger of Suspicion with the cards that were
tacked up on the map stacked on the desk next to it. You can put as many (or as
few) of the cards into the bowl of the Finger of Suspicion as you want.

When the card is placed in it, the finger will swing back and forth around the
bowl and stop on one of five options: Eavesdrop, Talk, Assist, Observe, or
Search Room.

When you've finished with a card, click on it and it will return to the top of
the stack of cards - there is an outline on the desk above the cards where you
can move it and any others that you don't want to put in the bowl so that you
can get to the ones that you want to get a hint about.

Act 1 - London, September 7, 1940
===============================================================================

It's the time of World War II, and you (Hastings) and Poirot are sitting in the
office of his flat in London during a blackout. Poirot decides to tell you of a
mystery he just solved but it received no publicity because the eyes and ears
of the whole world were focused on Germany, Hitler and the Third Reich.

Poirot wants to tell you the story as though you were the one just now solving
it and you will direct his actions. He also tells you of the "magical" Finger
of Suspicion that he has received as a gift given to him by a wizard from
Manchester. The device will help with your investigation if you become stuck
by giving you clues about what action you should follow.

Also, there is a side mystery - he will give you clues along the way for you to
figure out how the Finger of Suspicion works.

Poirot begins by showing you three episodes from the past -

The first - Seadrift Island, Devon - 1703
An inhabitant of the island, "in his cups", watches the ghost of
Tom Cutter pass through the door into the Smuggler's End Pub and
then disappear through the wall of the basement.

The second - Brixham near Devon - Spring 1940
A young girl returning home from her dance class is chased through
the woods and strangled.

The third - Brixham, South Devon - Spring 1940
Four robed figures performing some kind of strange ceremony - they
circle a post and a "doll", each stopping in turn and piercing the
doll with long hat pins. After the fourth pin is inserted in the
doll, a man sits up in his bed seemingly in great fear.

===============================================================================
*** Poirot's Office ***
When the cut-scenes are finished take a walk around Poirot's office.

There is a notebook on his desk - pick it up.

There is a book on top of a cabinet to the right of his desk - take a close-up
look - The Sorcerer's Apprentice by William Henry Nichols. It is an account of
"My Life, Times and Mechanical Contrivances Built for the Great Magicians of
the World". The inscription inside to Poirot says from "One GENIUS to Another".

Continuing to move to the right around the room -

Look at the map of the island on the wall (this is as close a rendition of the
map as I could make, but it shows approximately where each place is in relation
to each other) -

Take the case on the floor next to the dresser under the map.

Pick up the stopwatch from the end table between the couch and mirror.

Take the picture of Poirot and Hastings that is hanging on the wall - these
images will be used in the drop-down window to move you between Poirot's
office and the island.

Look closely at the file box on the shelf below where the picture was hanging
(the one with the lid off) - take the four files: Shipwreck, Drugs, Parsons
and Corrigan (read them in your notebook).

That's it. Click on Poirot to tell him that you are ready to begin solving
the mystery then click on the image of Hastings in the drop-down bar.

Your first clue to the Finger of Suspicion - POWER.

===============================================================================
Seadrift Island - August 24, 1940, Morning
===============================================================================
Inside hotel - go to balcony area, Reservation Desk, Hotel Office, the Sitting
Area, Suntrap Bar and the Dining Room.
Outside hotel - go to Smuggler's End Pub, Rocky Beach, Tennis Court, Bathing
Beach, The Ledges, Cutter's Cove, Monastery Ruins and Sanctuary Cove.
===============================================================================
*** Inside Smuggler's Rest Hotel ***
You begin in Poirot's room - a door behind you opens onto a veranda (there are
doors that access other rooms out there) and two doors in front of you - the
one on the left goes to his bathroom and the one on the right goes out to a
kind of balcony area with the doors to other rooms around it.

On the same side of that balcony as Poirot's room there is a hallway that leads
past some other rooms and to a spiral staircase that goes up (it's chained off
right now so you can ignore it - and the other doors are meaningless right now
so you can also ignore them).

On the other side of the balcony there is a spiral staircase that leads down to
the ground floor and that's where you're going to go, but first go to the left
and stop to talk with Gladys, the chambermaid.

Go downstairs and cross to the Reservation Desk - Mrs. Castle is there - talk
to her.

After she goes into her office - pick up a brochure there on the desk, open
your inventory and double-click on the brochure to get a close-up view then
click on the Magnifying Glass Button to open it up to read.

After you read the brochure go behind the desk and into the office to speak
with Mrs. Castle again.

(If you put the cursor over some of the things on her desk you'll notice that
it changes to the Eye Cursor, but Poirot will tell you that you can't look
through these things while the owner is standing right there.)

front

Leave the office and go toward the Sitting Area - stop and look closely at the
Guest Register (this will put the names of all the guests that are currently
registered into your notebook under suspects. As you interview them and gather
evidence the information gathered about each will be added).

In the Sitting Area there is a magazine on one of the chairs - pick it up and
take a close look at it. There is an article in it that you'll need later.

From the Sitting Area go to the door into the Suntrap Bar - speak to the
barman, Henry.

Next, go to the trashcan next to the double-doors and take an empty grenadine
bottle.

Go back through to the Sitting Area then turn toward the Reception Desk and
into the door on the left - this is a hallway that goes to the outside, but
there is a door on the right that leads to the Dining Room.

Go in there and on the right by the door there is a cart holding coffee flasks
and an empty glass - take the glass.

Go across to the other side of the room and speak to Rosamund Darnley.

===============================================================================
*** Outside the Hotel ***
SPECIAL NOTE: You can do the following in whatever order you wish - but you
need to do them all to move on to the next act, and if you go to the Bathing
Beach BEFORE the tennis court, you will have to go back to the Bathing Beach
AFTER you go to the tennis court.

As soon as you step outside the front door of the hotel, Poirot will mention
that this would be a good point to use the stopwatch to measure the time it
would take to go from there to Cutter's Cove - click on the stopwatch and do
timing number 1 - Smuggler's Rest Hotel to Cutter's Cove.

===============================================================================
*** Smuggler's End Pub ***
Go out the main door of the hotel and down the road - as you come up to the pub
you'll see a man looking out to sea with binoculars - talk to him.

Follow him (Shadow Cursor).

If you go to the board to your left, you'll notice that the sea tractor doesn't
operate on a fixed schedule and you have to call for it to come over and pick
you up - no one answers the phone.

On your way back up the road try the door - it's locked.

===============================================================================
*** Rocky Beach ***
When you get back up to the hotel take the dirt path that goes around to the
right side of it. When you turn around the side, you'll see stairs going up to
the veranda on that side and a rock in the grass - pick it up.

Continue down the path to the beach where you'll find Emily Brewster (there is
another rock on the beach behind her - take that one too).

Talk to Emily until you run out of conversation then back up the path.

===============================================================================
*** Tennis Courts ***
The quickest way to the tennis courts is to go through the side door into the
hotel, across the lobby to the hallway door and out to the patio then take the
path that goes up to the left.

Poirot will mention that this would be a good point to use the stopwatch to
measure the time it would take to go from there to Cutter's Cove - click on the
stopwatch and do timing number 2 - Tennis Court to Cutter's Cove.

You'll see Kenneth and Arlena talking on the court - they'll separate with
Arlena walking past you while Kenneth comes over to speak to you and give you
some threatening letters that Arlena has received.

When you have finished your conversation with Marshall, look at the letters
that Kenneth gave you in the Documents section of your notebook.

Before you leave click the cursor on the court area to get a comment about its
condition and on the rake to your left (leaning against the fence) then go back
toward the front of the hotel.

===============================================================================
*** Bathing Beach ***
When you get to the front of the hotel take the dirt path that goes down by the
wall, past the first lounge chair area and down to the chairs closest to the
stairs that go down to the Bathing Beach.

You'll meet Christine Redfern - talk to her.

Finish your conversation with her and then go down the stairs.

Poirot will mention that this would be a good point to use the stopwatch to
measure the time it would take to go from there to Cutter's Cove - click on the
stopwatch and do timing number 3 - Bathing Beach to Cutter's Cove.

After the timing, talk to George - finish with him then click the cursor on the
equipment shed for one more comment from him.

Next go over to the other man and talk to Major Montague Barry.

Finish your conversation with him then go down closer to the water and look out
at a couple floating together - Patrick and Arlena - and Christine is looking
down at them from above.

Go over to the beach chairs to your left and pick up the piece of cord that is
lying in the sand.

Now go back up the stairs and continue down the path going along the cliff and
away from the hotel.

===============================================================================
*** The Ledges ***
You'll come to a stone wall and patio-like place with chairs overlooking the
sea.

Poirot will mention that this would be a good point to use the stopwatch to
measure the time it would take to go from there to Cutter's Cove - click on
the stopwatch and do Timing Number 4 - The Ledges to Cutter's Cove.

There is a couple standing on the other side of the wall - put the cursor over
them and it will become the Eavesdrop Cursor - click and listen. When you are
done eavesdropping go over and talk to Oakley and Carrie Gardener.

Complete the conversation with them and when you are back on the other side
of the wall, put the cursor over them and eavesdrop again

Continue down the path in the same direction.

===============================================================================
*** Cutter's Cove ***
This will be the scene of the murder (down on the beach below but Poirot won't
climb down that ladder!).

There are two sturdy posts lying there on the ground - pick them both up.

Continue on down the path in the same direction.

===============================================================================
*** Monastery Ruins ***
Go through the opening on the other side of the fountain to look around.

Poirot will mention that this would be a good point to use the stopwatch to
measure the time it would take to go from there to Cutter's Cove - click on the
stopwatch and do Timing Number 5 - Monastery Ruins to Cutter's Cove.

Stephen Lane is there looking at something, but first go to the right and look
closely at the vines growing up the wall. Pull them back.

Next, continue to the right and take a close look at the large, round stone -
it appears to cover a large opening, but you don't have anything to move it yet
so turn around and click on that thing that Lane is staring at - it seems to be
an oar - "planted" in the middle of a circle of stones.

Go to Lane - talk to him. He will give you some chicken feathers that appear to
have blood on them - he picked them up from the edge of the circle around the
oar. Click on the oar again.

Leave the ruins and continue on down the path that goes past it.

===============================================================================
*** Sanctuary Cove ***
Go down the stairs to the cove - Poirot will mention that this would be a good
point to use the stopwatch to measure the time it would take to go from there
to Cutter's Cove - click on the stopwatch and do Timing Number 6 - Sanctuary
Cove to Cutter's Cove.

You'll see Linda Marshall kneeling in the sand by a pile of brush - talk to
her. She wants a blind so she can watch the Guillemots (the birds that have
been given that cove as a sanctuary, but she doesn't know how to do it. You'll
offer to do it for her and when she leaves at the end of your conversation,
open up your inventory and take out - 2 rocks, 2 sturdy posts and the cord,
then "use" them and the pile of brush to build the blind for her.

This will trigger the end of Act 1 - fade to Poirot's flat in London.

===============================================================================
Act 2 - London, September 7, 1940
===============================================================================

You and Poirot will discuss what you have seen and heard so far, and he will
suggest that you get to know the residents of Leathercombe Bay and look for
opportunities to assist anyone with a problem as they will be more likely to
assist you when you need help with a problem.

Click on Hastings' picture to go back to the island.

Your second clue to the Finger of Suspicion - LAMP.

===============================================================================
Seadrift Island - August 24, 1940, Afternoon
===============================================================================
Inside hotel - go to Stephen Lane's room, Major Barry's room, the Tower Room,
Kenneth Marshall's room, Rosamund Darnley's room and the Hotel Office - after
trips outside go back to the Suntrap Bar then later to the Gardener's room.
Outside hotel - go to the Patio, Bathing Beach, The Ledges, Cutter's Cove, the
Island Summit, (bar), Bathing Beach, back to Cutter's Cove, Monastery Ruins,
Sanctuary Cove, (the Gardener's), back to Sanctuary Cove and Rocky Beach then a
trip to Leathercombe Bay.
===============================================================================
Back in Poirot's room - Gladys is there and mentions "fresh towels".

After she leaves, go into the bathroom and take the towels from the rack by the
mirror. Go out through the main door and you'll see Gladys's cart to your left.
Move in close and take the brush, the scissors and the detergent off the cart,
then go back into your room and out through the door to the veranda.

===============================================================================
*** Stephen Lane's Room ***
Go into the first door on your right - Stephen Lane's room. Look at the Bible
that is open on the table - Rev. 2:20.

Go into his bathroom and open the cabinet over the sink - take the mineral oil
and two pills from the unmarked pill bottle.

Go back out through the door to the veranda.

===============================================================================
*** Major Barry's Room ***
Go to the door on the left side of Poirot's room (all other doors on that side
of the hotel are locked).

Look at the papers on the table by the bed.

Go over to the suitcase on his bed and use the scissors to "borrow" a piece of
the leather strap on top of it.

If you put the cursor on his pillow, you will notice that it is a hotspot, but
there isn't anything there (this time!).

Leave Barry's room by the door going to the inside and go to the staircase
going up to the Tower Room.

===============================================================================
*** Tower Room ***
Look around and you'll find Mrs. Castle up there using binoculars to look out
toward the sea - talk to her.

Ask to borrow her binoculars -

OPTIONS:
Correct response: To help in the watch for U-boats.

She will let you if you do a favor for her - return a book to the Lending
Library in Leathercombe Bay.

After she leaves, use the binoculars to look out in different directions -
you will see a periscope slipping through the water and Horace Blatt in his
sailboat - it has red sails.

After you leave the Tower Room go to the hallway on the other side and out the
door on the right - this goes to the veranda on the other side of the hotel
from Poirot's room. Go to the second door.

===============================================================================
*** Kenneth Marshall's Room ***
Click on the door and listen to Kenneth and Arlena's conversation about Patrick
Redfern. When they've finished talking move on down the veranda.

The next door down is locked so go on to the next one. Go in.

===============================================================================
*** Rosamund Darnley's Room ***
Rosamund's suitcase is on her bed - open it - take the blank typing paper.

Leave the room by the door going to the inside of the hotel and go down the
stairs.

===============================================================================
*** Hotel Office ***
Mrs. Castle isn't in her office, so now is a good time to take a look around.

Look at the calendar on her desk - there are four dates: August 2, 11, 17 and
21, marked with a "U" (U-boat sightings on these dates).

Notice the bust of Tom Cutter sitting on the desk - the felt on the bottom is
loose. Tilt the bust over on its side and pull the felt away to find a locked
compartment on the bottom.

There is a picture frame on the desk - move it and you'll find a key hidden
underneath. Use it to open the compartment - another key!

Open the desk drawer and you'll find a layout of the guest's rooms and the name
of the guest in each room.

Go to the safe in the corner - that key you just found will open it up.
Inside you will find an oil lantern, a German 2-way radio and a code book -
take a close look at that code book - it's not a normal code.

Go out through one of the doors that goes to the patio.

===============================================================================
*** Patio ***
Kenneth Marshall and Rosamund Darnley are out there talking together - listen
in on their conversation.

When their conversation is done go down to the Bathing Beach.

===============================================================================
*** Bathing Beach ***
Go down the stairs and toward the water - use the binoculars to look out toward
a swimmer's float - there seems to be a life ring buoy snagged on it.

You need to find Patrick Redfern to swim out for it.

Go back up the stairs and head for The Ledges.

===============================================================================
*** The Ledges ***
Carrie Gardener is at The Ledges by herself - knitting.

Talk to her - it is her anniversary and she has no gift to give to Oakley.
Offer to find a gift for her to give him in exchange for the shawl.

Leave Carrie and go on to Cutter's Cove.

===============================================================================
*** Cutter's Cove ***
You'll find the Redferns there - listen in on their conversation, then speak to
Patrick after Christine leaves.

He can't swim out to the float and retrieve the life ring buoy because his
goggles are broken. Offer to repair them for him.

When you leave him continue toward the Monastery Ruins, but when you get to the
fork in the path go to the right and up the hill that is there.

===============================================================================
*** Island Summit ***
The Island Summit is the highest point on the island, and when you get to the
top, you will find Oakley Gardener up there - talk to him.

He has forgotten about his anniversary and also has no gift for Carrie.

When you've finished talking to Oakley, go back down the hill - continue along
that path back to the hotel.

===============================================================================
*** Suntrap Bar ***
There is an ice pick sitting on the bar - take it and "use" it on the strap you
"borrowed" from Major Barry's suitcase - "use" the strap to repair goggles.

When they are repaired go back to Patrick, but make a stop at the Bathing Beach
on your way back to Cutter's Cove.

===============================================================================
*** Bathing Beach ***
George is not at his post guarding the shed, so now is the time to make a
little raid.

Go to the shed and take - the other oar that is still in there, the bottle of
boat varnish and the swimmer's float.

Once you have these things go back up the stairs and on to Cutter's Cove.

===============================================================================
*** Cutter's Cove ***
Give Patrick his repaired goggles and he'll swim out to get the life ring buoy

- CUT-SCENE -

Look closely at the buoy in your inventory - it seems to be from Blatt's boat,
the Parsimony, and it also seems to have bullet holes in it!

After Patrick retrieves the life ring buoy continue down the path to the ruins.

===============================================================================
*** Monastery Ruins ***
Now that you have something to move it, see what's behind that round stone. Use
the oar and the stone rolls away.

There is a tunnel behind it.

Go down the tunnel until you come to where it branches - Poirot won't go in any
further because he's afraid he could get lost in a maze of tunnels.

If you look ahead on the ground you'll see something shiny - pick it up. You've
found Oakley's anniversary gift - it's a gold coin.

Go back out the way you went in and down to Sanctuary Cove to see how Linda
likes the blind you built for her.

===============================================================================
*** Sanctuary Cove ***
Linda loves the blind, but there is a bird on the beach that's in trouble. It
seems to be covered in oil and Poirot nor Hastings know what to do to help it,
but Linda pleads for you to save it.

Take the path that passes by the tennis courts back to the hotel and go up to
the Gardener's room.

===============================================================================
*** The Gardener's Room ***
Knock and give Carrie the coin - she will give you the shawl - one favor done.

Now go back to Sanctuary Cove to try and catch that bird for Linda.

===============================================================================
*** Sanctuary Cove ***
Click on the bird near the blind and Hastings will convince Poirot to use the
shawl that he got from Carrie like a fishing net to catch the bird. Take the
shawl from inventory and click on the bird again.

- CUT-SCENE -

Poirot tells Linda to take the bird to his bath and wait for him there.

Go back up the path toward the hotel - there is one more stop to make before
going down to call the sea tractor.

Go to the Rocky Beach (the quickest way is through the hotel going in the door
into the hallway, through the lobby and out the door on the other side).

===============================================================================
*** Rocky Beach ***
When you come out the other door, you'll see Major Barry standing there. He'll
turn around startled when you come up behind him then walk off in a huff.

Go down the path to the beach.

You'll find Arlena sunning herself on the beach - talk to her.

She has received a third threatening letter.

When she dismisses you take a close look at that third letter then go to the
sea tractor landing and call Will Jenks to take you to Leathercombe Bay.

===============================================================================
*** Leathercombe Bay ***
===============================================================================
In Leathercombe Bay - go to Will's garage, Adelaide's store and Monk's Hood Pub
then back to the island.
===============================================================================
*** Will's Garage ***
Go into the garage and speak to Will.

Continue down the path and into what's left of the town - go to Adelaide's
store.

===============================================================================
*** Adelaide's Store ***
The next building you come to on the right -
Layout of the counters inside -

Go to the Chemist's counter and speak with Adelaide Hughes - she runs all
three operations on her own.

===============================================================================
*** Chemist's Counter ***
Talk to Adelaide Hughes.

After you talk to her, click on the test tubes behind her, but she'll tell you
that she can't let you use that equipment (yet).

Take the red bottle sitting on one of the shelves. Look at it closely in your
inventory - it is cough syrup that contains pomegranate juice.

Take the spatula sitting on the counter in front of you.

Move over to the Lending Library counter.

===============================================================================
*** Lending Library Counter ***
When you move over to the other counter, Mrs. Hughes will follow you over. Ask
her about books that have to do with taking care of wild birds, return the book
that Mrs. Castle asked you to return and ask her if she has any books for sale
that might be suitable for an anniversary present.

She has a book called "Easy French Knitting Patterns" that will be a suitable
gift for Mrs. Gardener since she likes to knit.

One problem... The book costs one and six (one pound and six schillings) and
Poirot doesn't have enough money. Hastings suggests that he wire his bank for
more money.

Go across to the Post Office counter.

===============================================================================
*** Post Office Counter ***
(Notice the cat sitting on the table in front of the mail rack and what seems
to be some letters behind the mail rack.)

Click on the stack of paper sitting on the counter and choose:
"To: Fagin and Sons New Commerce Bank, London S. W. 1"...

Finish sending the telegram off, then click on the cat and on the envelopes.

You are done here for now, but on your way out take one of the brochures in
the rack by the door - look closely at it inventory and you will see that it
is for St. Patrick-in-the-Combe Church near Leathercombe Bay.

Continue down the street to the Monk's Hood Pub on the left.

===============================================================================
*** Monk's Hood Pub ***
Go into the pub and meet Baskerville - the very large Great Dane sitting there
by the door, under the life ring buoy hanging on the wall. He growls.

Walk toward the two men at the other end of the pub.
The one on the left is Poirot's good friend, Colonel Weston - talk to him.

You'll borrow a key to the Smuggler's End Pub and a stethoscope.

Finish talking to Weston then go over to the man sitting at the table.

This is Horace Blatt - talk to him.

Check out the dartboard at that end of the pub - you'll be using it later.

Stop at the bar on your way out and talk to Albert.

Go back to Will's garage and ask him to take you back to the island.

===============================================================================
*** Seadrift Island ***
===============================================================================
When you get back to the island go to Poirot's room and the Smuggler's End Pub
then another trip back to Leathercombe Bay.
===============================================================================
*** Poirot's Room ***
Linda is waiting for you in the bathroom -

1. Double-click on the book in your inventory to read the instructions
for cleaning up the bird.

2. Click on Linda to start the process.

3. Click on the mineral oil in your inventory then click on the brush
to "put" the oil on the brush.

4. "Give" the brush with mineral oil on it to Linda (she will use it on
the motor oil on the bird.

5. Click on the detergent in your inventory then click on the brush to
"put" the detergent on the brush.

6. "Give" the brush with detergent on it to Linda (she will use it to
remove the oils from the bird's feathers.

7. Turn on the tubs tap to rinse the soap and oil off the bird.

8. "Give" Linda the towels you took to dry it off.

After Linda leaves to return the bird to Sanctuary Cove, you need to go back to
Leathercombe Bay to get that knitting book.

On the way to the sea tractor landing stop at Smuggler's End Pub and use that
key that you got from Colonel Weston.

===============================================================================
*** Smuggler's End Pub ***
Use the key to unlock the door and take a quick look around.

Upstairs at the far end of the room you'll notice a dartboard on the wall.

Downstairs there is a cask with a spigot stacked up next to a wall with what
appears to be another dartboard etched into the brick of the wall - there are
three holes in one of the narrow bands of the dart board (near the top - under
the 20 - three darts in that positon would be considered a "ton-eighty") that
are larger than the other holes that are scattered around the etching.

Go down to the sea tractor landing - call Will to take you across.

===============================================================================
*** Leathercombe Bay ***
===============================================================================
Go to Adelaide's Store then back to the island and over to the lounge chairs.
===============================================================================
*** Adelaide's Store ***
When you go inside you will startle Linda Marshall and she will drop a box full
of candles - talk to her.

After she leaves go to the Post Office counter.

===============================================================================
*** Post Office Counter ***
Talk to Mrs. Hughes and get your bank funds.

Go to the Lending Library counter.

===============================================================================
*** Lending Library Counter ***
Mrs. Hughes will follow you over and you will have to ask her again for a gift.
This time she will mention the knitting book first. Buy it and also pick up the
sketch pad on the display stand on the counter - it costs 5 pence.

That's it for now - back to the garage and across to the island.

===============================================================================
*** Seadrift Island ***
When you get to the island, go up the hill toward the hotel then turn down the
path that goes to the Bathing Beach. You'll find Oakley Gardener there by the
lounge chairs.

You'll give him the "Easy French Knitting Patterns" book for his anniversary
present to Carrie.

This will trigger the end of Act 2 - fade to Poirot's flat in London.

===============================================================================
Act 3 - London, September 7, 1940
===============================================================================

You and Poirot will discuss what you've seen and heard so far, the fact that
almost everyone you've talked to has something to hide and he will suggest that
you try to dispose of "red herrings".

Click on Hastings' picture to go back to the island.

Your third clue to the Finger of Suspicion - DESK.

===============================================================================
Seadrift Island - August 24, 1940, Evening
===============================================================================
*** Seadrift Island ***
===============================================================================
Inside hotel - start in Poirot's room, then go to Major Barry's room, Linda
Marshall's room, the Gardener's room, Kenneth Marshall's room, the veranda
outside the Redfern's room, the Redfern's room and the Dining Room.
Outside hotel - go to Smuggler's End Pub, the lounge chairs in front of the
hotel, The Ledges, the Monastery Ruins and the patio at the side of the hotel.
===============================================================================
*** Poirot's Room ***
There is a knock on the door - it's Kenneth Marshall. He has something that
he'd like you to do. Find out who took Arlena's picture from his room.

You'll tell him that you will do what you can to return it to him.

There is one person on the island who is obsessed with Arlena - after he
leaves, go out the veranda door and to the left to Major Barry's door.

===============================================================================
*** Major Barry's Room ***
Go inside and back to that pillow that had nothing underneath it before - lift
the pillow and take Arlena's picture - look at it closely in your inventory and
then Barry will come in - talk to him.

He will do a favor for you because you tell him you won't tell Marshall that he
was the one who took it.

He is going to do a little dog training for you.

Leave Barry's room by the door going to the inside of the hotel, turn down the
hallway away from the Tower stairs and stop at the third door on the right
side - Linda Marshall's room.

===============================================================================
*** Linda Marshall's Room ***
The door is locked, but Poirot says that he can hear voices and it might be a
good idea to listen closer - use the stethoscope.

You can hear Linda in there saying something in French. Hastings suggests that
she is practicing her French Lesson and Poirot says that, if that is so, it is
the most unusual lesson. She is saying:
"I beat you! I break you! I curse you!"

Go around the balcony to the left to the door of the Gardener's room.

===============================================================================
*** The Gardener's Room ***
Click on their door then use the stethoscope again.

Go down the hallway toward the staircase that goes to the ground floor. Before
you get to the stairs, exit to the veranda through the door on the right and go
to Kenneth Marshall's room (second door).

===============================================================================
*** Kenneth Marshall's Room ***
Go into his room and across to the typewriter on the desk by the door.

"Use" a piece of that blank typing paper that you took earlier to test his
typewriter - "put" the paper in the typewriter and click on the keys to start
it typing, then pull the paper out of the typewriter - no match!

Go back out through the veranda door and continue on down to the Redfern's
room at the end.

===============================================================================
*** Veranda Outside the Redfern's Room ***
Patrick Redfern is standing out there on the balcony - talk to him, then he
will go off.

Go inside their room.

===============================================================================
*** The Redfern's Room ***
There is a case "tucked" under the bed - pull it out - it's a typewriter and
the initials on the case are "RD" - for Rosamund Darnley!

Test it the same way that you did Kenneth Marshall's - no match!

You will take the typewriter to return it to Rosamund.

Go out through the door that goes to the inside, downstairs to the ground
floor and into the Dining Room.

===============================================================================
*** The Dining Room ***
The Gardeners are in here - talk to them.

Oakley also confesses that the real reason they have come to the island was to
search for Tom Cutter's treasure.

Leave them and go outside through the main doors and down the path toward the
pub.

===============================================================================
*** Smuggler's End Pub ***
When you get near the pub you'll see a glowing figure standing in the doorway.

Put the cursor on it and it will become the Shadow Cursor - click and you will
follow it inside - then you have to click again to follow footprints that go
down the stairs to the basement.

Go back up the hill toward the hotel then take the path that goes down toward
the Bathing Beach.

===============================================================================
*** Lounge Chairs ***
You will find Kenneth Marshall at the lounge chairs - talk to him and return
Arlena's picture.

OPTIONS:
Correct choice: Your daughter had some difficulty at her school, I believe?

Continue down the path to The Ledges.

===============================================================================
*** The Ledges ***
Patrick and Arlena are there "enjoying the beautiful view". Listen in on their
conversation.

Continue on down the path toward the ruins, but at the fork in the path stop
and take the shovel that's stuck in the ground there.

===============================================================================
*** Monastery Ruins ***
When you get inside the ruins, you will find Emily Brewster - talk to her.

When you have finished your conversation with her return to the hotel by the
path that goes to the patio.

===============================================================================
*** The Patio ***
Christine Redfern is there - speak to her and give her the sketchbook that you
bought at the Lending Library.

This will trigger the end of Act 3 - fade to Poirot's flat in London.

===============================================================================
Act 4 - London, September 7, 1940
===============================================================================

You and Poirot will discuss what you've seen and heard so far and Poirot will
give you a few clues to the investigation - including - think on the kind of
person Arlena Stuart was because, until you understand her completely, you
can't possibly solve her murder.

Click on Hastings' picture to go back to the island.

Your fourth clue to the Finger of Suspicion - DRAWER.

===============================================================================
Seadrift Island - August 25, 1940, Morning
===============================================================================
Inside hotel - go to the balcony outside Poirot's room, the Tower Room, Linda
Marshall's Room and after trip outside the Hotel Sitting Area.
Outside hotel - go to Bathing Beach, Smuggler's End Pub and the Island Summit
then go to Leathercombe Bay.
===============================================================================
*** The Balcony Outside Poirot's Room ***
Stephen Lane is standing on the balcony outside your room - talk to him.

Give him the brochure that you picked up at Adelaide's Store. He will thank you
and declare that it will make a nice outing to hike to St. Patrick's-on-the-
Combes Church.

After Lane leaves go up to the Tower Room.

===============================================================================
*** Tower Room ***
When you get up in the Lookout Tower use the binoculars - look in the direction
over the staircase. You will see Blatt's sailboat again only this time it has
white sails.

Turn to your right and use the binoculars again - another periscope!

That is all there is to see up there so go back downstairs and stop at the
third door - Linda Marshall's room.

===============================================================================
*** Linda Marshall's Room ***
Knock on Linda's door and talk to her.

When the conversation is done, she will ask you to leave so that she can get
ready to meet Christine.

Leave her room and go down to the Bathing Beach - Arlena is there.

===============================================================================
*** Bathing Beach ***
Arlena is down near the water's edge - walk over and talk to her. You'll give
her the float that you took from the shed and she goes off saying she wants to
be left alone for once.

Go back up the stairs and talk to Kenneth Marshall and Patrick Redfern.

Take a walk over to the Smuggler's End Pub.

===============================================================================
*** Smuggler's End Pub ***
As you come up to the pub, you will see that North chap again. Poirot will ask
you what you think is the best course of action -

OPTIONS:
Correct response: Ask Mrs. Redfern to make a sketch of him!

Before you go back to find her go into the pub and, even if you did it the
first time you went into the pub, go down to the dartboard at the far end of
the room and take a close look at it.

A close look reveals that someone has carved letters into it near some of the
numbers - an "N" by the number 20 at the top, another "N" by the number 19 on
the bottom left and an "E" by the number 15 on the bottom right.

These are directions and the number of paces to take in each direction - Tom
Cutter spent most of his time at the highest point of the island - the Island
Summit!

First go back to the hotel and find Christine Redfern and ask her to make that
sketch for you.

===============================================================================
*** Hotel Sitting Area ***
Go through the main door of the hotel and you will see Christine there waiting
for Linda - talk to her.

After she leaves Rosamund Darnley comes in - talk to her and return her
typewriter.

Leave the hotel through the double doors in the bar and go to the Island
Summit.

===============================================================================
*** Island Summit ***
At the Island Summit you will automatically begin "pacing" out the directions
from the dartboard, and you will end up in the middle of the tennis court -
digging! Alas, no treasure.

As you leave, pick up the tennis ball sitting in the grass near the path.

Go down to the sea tractor landing and call Will.

===============================================================================
*** Leathercombe Bay ***
===============================================================================
Go to - the Monk's Hood Pub, Adelaide's Store, the Police Station and back to
Will's Garage then back to the island.
===============================================================================
*** Monk's Hood Pub ***
Talk to Albert about the Island Summit.

After talking to Albert go down to the end of the pub where the tables are -
pick up the rather stale corned beef sandwich that is sitting on one of them.

Go back to Major Barry and talk to him about Baskerville. Baskerville is ready
for the task that Poirot needs done - the three of you will be taking a walk
to Adelaide's Store.

===============================================================================
*** Adelaide's Store - Post Office ***

- CUT-SCENE -

When you get there Baskerville won't go into the building - you need something
to lure him in. Enter the Post Office and automatically set the sandwich on the
floor. Baskerville comes through the door and then nature goes to work.

After the cut-scene ends click on the letters and the counter and the shelves
move out - pick up the letters and return them to Mrs. Hughes.

OPTIONS:
Correct response: I could make good use of your testing equipment.

Go to the Chemist Counter.

===============================================================================
*** Chemist Counter ***
There is a book on the counter behind Mrs. Hughes - "The Chemists Friend" -
click on it once to move in close then again to open it to the Table of
Contents page.

Take Stephen Lane's pills out of your inventory and "put" them in a test tube.
Pick up the test tube then click on "Drugs" in the Table of Contents.

The "test" is done automatically - the result: Trional.

When the test is done leave there and go to the Police Station.

===============================================================================
*** Police Station ***
Go into Weston's office - talk to him.

Ask to test the typewriter sitting on the desk in front of him.

Test this typewriter the same way that you did the others - it's a match!

OPTIONS:
Correct question: Was it Linda Marshall?

Talk to Weston again about all topics.

There will be a quick fade to Poirot's office after your discussion - you'll
read Poirot's notes then tell him your conclusions -

OPTIONS:
This time you will choose two -
First correct response: Something about the film - he was alone in there for
2 hours.

Second correct response: The title - this is the same film that he had taken
the girls to not long before the murder!

He would already have known the plot when the police asked him to verify his
alibi!

Fade back to the Police Station and tell Weston your deductions that will help
to break the teacher's alibi.

Go back to the garage.

===============================================================================
*** Will's Garage ***
When you get to the garage, Will can't take you across to the island because
the sea tractor needs some engine work, but Major Barry's car needs the points
cleaned ASAP because he wants to drive into Kingsbridge so, if you could help
him out...

You will use the article in the car magazine that you picked up at the hotel
for the instructions to clean points.

Will leaves to fix the sea tractor - look at the magazine article then go over
to the work table between the two cars.

You need the flat file that is on the lower shelf of the table, the screwdriver
and the spanner (wrench) that are on the table top.

Poirot will let out a yelp of pain when you pick up the spanner. It's a sliver
of metal - maybe magnetic.

(Look closely at the spanner and be sure that you click on the Magnifying Glass
Button - this will put the sliver of metal in your inventory - you will need it
later.)

Go to the blue car -

Look closely at the round cover held in place by a "wing nut" - "turn" it to
remove that cover.

Take the spanner from inventory and "use" it to remove the hexagonal nut -
the first of two points is now in your inventory. Open the inventory and "use"
the flat file on it - you now have a clean point - "put" it back in the engine.

Take the screwdriver from inventory and "use" it to remove the screw holding
the second point - it is now in your inventory - clean it the same way that you
did the first - "put" it back in the engine and you are finished with the car.

Go outside the garage and Will asks if the car is done and tells you that the
sea tractor is "purring like a kitten" then he takes off inside - you have to
chase him down to ask for a ride back to the island.

===============================================================================
*** Seadrift Island ***
Go to the lounge chairs in front of the hotel then go to Smuggler's End Pub,
the Rocky Beach, back to the lounge chairs, Sanctuary Cove and to Kenneth
Marshall's room.
===============================================================================
*** Lounge Chairs - Treasure Hunt ***
The pacing out of the directions is automatic and this time you will end up on
the other side of the hotel digging up the path to the Rocky Beach.

This time you will find a box and inside the box - three gold darts!

Darts... Dartboards... Ton-eighty... Smuggler's Inn Pub basement!

Go down to the pub.

===============================================================================
*** Smuggler's End Pub ***
Go down to the basement and walk up to the dartboard that is etched into the
stone and look closely at those three holes in the ring below the number 20 -
"put" the three darts into those holes and a door going into a tunnel opens.

Look down at the floor of the tunnel and you will see numerous footprints -
one man passing through many times - and there to your right - a coat painted
with a luminescent paint!

Some Ghost!!!

Again, Poirot won't go very far into the tunnel, so turn around and leave the
tunnel and the pub.

Head up the hill toward the hotel and then take the path down to Rocky Beach.

===============================================================================
*** Rocky Beach ***
Emily Brewster is down on the beach - talk to her.

Someone has thrown something at her from the veranda above, narrowly missing
her head while she was swimming!

Tell her that you have solved the murder of Millie Parsons - that all the case
needs is for the police to complete breaking down the teacher's alibi.

When your conversation is finished she says that she is going off for a row
around the island, so go back up the path and out to the lounge chairs where
the Gardeners are.

===============================================================================
*** Lounge Chairs ***
Speak to the Gardeners then Carrie will ask Oakley to go fetch some wool that
she needs for her knitting, and Patrick will come up while you are there. He is
obviously in a foul mood.

You still need to get the sketch from Christine - go to Sanctuary Cove where
she is spending the day with Linda Marshall.

As you pass by The Ledges notice that Rosamund Darnley is still there sitting
in a chair near the far wall - no need to stop and bother her.

===============================================================================
*** Sanctuary Cove ***
When you get to the cove, Christine and Linda are sitting in chairs on the deck
above the beach.

Speak to Christine the first time - she will give you the sketch she drew of
North, but if you try to speak to her again you'll see that she, too, is in a
foul mood.

Poirot won't even try to speak to Linda - do not disturb her.

You need to get that sketch back to Weston, but before you leave check up on
the whereabouts of one more suspect - go to the hotel and up the stairs.

===============================================================================
*** Kenneth Marshall's Room ***
Stand outside the door of Kenneth Marshall's room and click on it - this will
get the comment from Poirot that he thinks he can hear voices inside and you
should listen with the stethoscope - typing! Lots of it!

Once you have confirmed that Kenneth is in his room, you can leave the hotel
and go down to the tractor landing.

===============================================================================
*** Leathercombe Bay ***
When you get across to Leathercombe Bay, go to the Police Station.
===============================================================================
*** Police Station ***
When you go in and speak to Colonel Weston, you'll give him the sketch of North
and automatically find yourself back on Seadrift Island!

===============================================================================
*** Seadrift Island ***
You are standing on the path going past the hotel and down to the Rocky Beach.
As you stand there, you hear the sound of water draining down the hotel's drain
pipe - someone taking a bath in the afternoon!

Someone taking a bath long after everyone should have finished their morning
preparations.

This will trigger the end of Act 4 - fade to Poirot's flat in London.

===============================================================================
Act 5 - London, September 7, 1940
===============================================================================

You and Poirot will discuss what you've seen and heard so far and Poirot will
tell you that the locations of suspects will be marked on the map on the wall
in his office. He also tells you not to neglect the inhabitants of Leathercombe
Bay.

Click on Hastings' picture to go back to the island.

Your fifth clue to the Finger of Suspicion - MAGNET.

===============================================================================
Seadrift Island - August 25, 1940, Late Morning (11:40am)
===============================================================================
- CUT-SCENE -
The act opens with Emily Brewster and Patrick Redfern rowing around the island.
As they round an outcropping of rock, they see a figure lying in on the beach
at Cutter's Cove. They recognize Arlena and turn toward shore (Emily protests -
she just wants to finish her row), and Patrick beaches the boat, jumps out and
runs over calling her name, but there is no response. He touches her hand, her
arm, lifts her hat and falls back exclaiming that she's dead!

When the cut-scene ends -
Inside hotel - go to the Hotel Office and the Sitting area.
Outside hotel - the lounge chairs, the Bathing Beach, Cutter's Cove, back to
the lounge chairs.

Back inside - Reception Desk, Arlena Marshall's room, Kenneth Marshall's room,
Linda Marshall's room, Rosamund Darnley's room, the Redfern's room, the veranda
outside the Redfern's room, Major Barry's room (optional), Stephen Lane's room
(optional), Horace Blatt's room, the Gardener's room, Emily Brewster's room.
Back outside - Sanctuary Cove - via the tennis court, the Bathing Beach, short
trip inside to the Suntrap Bar, down to Smuggler's Inn Pub, back to the bar
then back to the Bathing Beach.
===============================================================================
*** Hotel Office ***
Mrs. Castle isn't at the desk so go into the office and you'll find her there -
speak to her.

Leave the office and go toward the Sitting Area.

===============================================================================
*** Sitting Area ***
When you get into the Sitting Area, you will see Gladys standing there - also
obviously upset - she won't talk, so leave the hotel and take the path that
goes toward the Bathing Beach.

===============================================================================
*** Lounge Chairs ***
The Gardeners are there, but they won't talk.

Leave them and go down to the Bathing Beach.

===============================================================================
*** Bathing Beach ***
You will find Emily there standing by the rowboat at the water's edge.

Speak to her and she will row you to Cutter's Cove.

===============================================================================
*** Cutter's Cove ***
You will see then go over to Colonel Weston when you get there - he will ask
you to lead the investigation because he is so busy with the Home Guard.

Continue talking to him until the conversation is exhausted.

===============================================================================
*** Crime Scene ***
Look closely at the body and the area around it.

Pick up the coffee flask that is lying near the body, and there is a stain in
the sand (it smells like coffee), also notice the ribbon on her hat. A piece
seems to have been torn off.

Go over to Patrick.

*** Patrick's Evidence ***
He will tell you about rowing with Emily, what he did when he got to the beach
and who it was that went to call for help.

He will also tell you that he thought that he heard a clatter somewhere near
the ladder that comes down to the beach from the path above.

*** Searching the Area ***
When you've finished speaking to him go over by the ladder - something in the
sand - a smashed smoker's pipe?

To your right is Cutter's Cave - head over that way, but before you get there
you will notice a piece of ribbon - a piece of green ribbon that matches the
torn ribbon on Arlena's hat.

Continue into the cave and you will notice some smashed glass lying on the
floor of the cave - pick it up and examine it.

Also, on the wall of the cave there is a blob of mud that seems to be covering
something shiny. Use the spatula that you "borrowed" from Adelaide Hughes to
scrape off the mud.

There's a hexagonal (6-sided) metal receptacle - it looks like the receptacle
for a sailboat winch handle?

There is nothing else of interest in the cave - now. So leave and go back to
the body. You need a sample of that hat ribbon to compare with the piece that
you found - use the scissors that you got from Gladys's cart to "cut" off a
piece.

*** Emily's Evidence ***
Go over to where Emily is waiting by the boat - speak to her.

After you finish talking, "talk" to her again and ask her to row you back to
the Bathing Beach.

When you get back to the beach go up the stairs to the lounge chairs.

===============================================================================
*** Lounge Chairs ***
The Gardeners are still there - speak to them.

Go on up to the hotel when you've finished talking to them.

===============================================================================
*** Reception Desk ***
Talk to Mrs. Castle again - she will give you the master key to the hotel. Ask
her about her activities that morning.

If you didn't find the floor plan when you searched her office earlier, ask her
for it now.

Now that you have the key, it's time to go search some rooms.

===============================================================================
*** Arlena Marshall's Room ***
Piece of paper on table by one of the chairs - pick up a letter signed J. N.

Top of bureau by veranda door - three passionate letters from Patrick. Read
these two things in the Documents section of your Notebook.

Go in her bathroom - in the cabinet above the w.c. take the bottle of perfume.
There is also an unmarked bottle - unknown contents - take it.

On the bathtub - bottle of bath salts - take it.

To your right is Arlena's hairbrush - pick it up.

Look at everything closely in inventory - use the Magnifying Glass Button when
necessary - especially on the brush, and some strands of hair will be removed
to be compared with other hairs later.

That's it for Arlena's room - go on to the next.

===============================================================================
*** Kenneth Marshall's Room ***
Marshall is in there, so rather than searching the room, question him.

Arlena's solicitors were Barkett & Applegood - you'll need to get in touch with
them.

When you've finished your conversation, he will leave.

That's it for Kenneth's room - go on to the next

===============================================================================
*** Linda Marshall's Room ***
Go into Linda's room and look around - start with the fireplace.

In and near the firebox you'll find a piece of burnt green fabric and strands
of burned hair - take those. Linda's watch is sitting on the mantel - take it.

Over on her bed is a hat with a stickpin in it - take it. Look closely at all
of these things.

On the bureau behind you is a puzzle box - the lock seems to be four rings with
zodiac symbols on them and an arrow pointing up. You need some clue to the
combination to open it.

===============================================================================
*** Rosamund Darnley's Room ***
Rosamund is in there, so rather than searching the room, question her.

You will ask for her help and you will be given some options for a favor to ask
her in return for returning her typewriter -

OPTIONS:
Correct question: Could you compare some pieces of fabric for me?

You will automatically give her the three pieces of green fabric that you
have collected and she will tell you about them.

Leave her now and go to the next room.

===============================================================================
*** The Redfern's Room ***
There is a suitcase on the dresser to your right - open it and take out a
picture of Patrick and Christine.

The only other thing of interest is a bag on the floor near the door to the
veranda - Christine's sketching supplies.

Go through the door to the veranda.

===============================================================================
*** Veranda Outside the Redfern's Room ***
Christine is sitting out there - talk to her.

Go back into the hotel through whichever door that you can get in.

===============================================================================
*** Major Barry's Room ***
You can look - but there's nothing more of interest in his room.

Go on to the next room.

===============================================================================
*** Stephen Lane's Room ***
You can look - but there's nothing more of interest in his room.

Go on to the next room.

===============================================================================
*** Horace Blatt's Room ***
Go into Blatt's room and look in his suitcase. There is a stain that appears to
be oil under his clothes. Use the spatula that you borrowed from Adelaide's
Store to scrape up a sample.

That's it for his room, go on to the next.

===============================================================================
*** The Gardener's Room ***
There is a paper sitting on a desk across the room - pick it up and look at it
closely.

Going back toward the door there is a waste basket - look inside, there are
some torn up paper scraps - something to assemble.

When you pick up the scraps they will come up as a scrambled page. Your job is
to unscramble it by clicking on one piece that you want to move to a new
position, then click on another piece that is occupying the position that you
want to move the first piece to - they will swap positions. When every piece is
in the correct position the page will "mend" together into a complete page.

Things to help - use the border around the paper - the corners are obvious -
the flat side of the border goes to the inside of the page - look for partial
words on one piece and then find the piece that has the rest of the word - and
of course, read those words that can be read and look for sentences that make
sense. The hardest part is the two side borders - it is easy to mix up the top
side and the bottom side.

What you are reading is a "letter of regret" sent to Oakley by Arlena, but a
scribbled note in someone else's handwritting shows that they believed that her
"personal emergency" was starring in an American film!

===============================================================================
*** Emily Brewster's Room ***
There is a piece of paper on the dresser - pick it up and read it in the
Documents section of your Notebook.

There is nothing else of interest in her room - it's time to go find Linda
Marshall. She's gone back to Sanctuary Cove, but on the way there you need to
take a detour up to the tennis court.

George is there, but don't disturb him.

===============================================================================
*** Sanctuary Cove ***
When you find Linda - talk to her.

That's all you will get from her - time to go find George and ask him to do a
little favor for you. He's back at the Bathing Beach (if you took the detour by
the tennis court).

===============================================================================
*** Bathing Beach ***
Talk to George.

OPTIONS:
Correct response: You told me that you would be the Navy frogman soon.

Ask him to dive for the thing that was thrown into the water at Rocky Beach and
nearly hit Emily Brewster.

He'll do it, but his nerves are frazzled and he needs some "liquid courage".
His favorite beverage is Planter's Punch.

Go to the Suntrap Bar and talk to Henry.

===============================================================================
*** Suntrap Bar ***
When you talk to Henry, he will give you a menu - order the Planter's Punch,
but he is out of dark rum and grenadine. Poirot will automatically offer the
cough syrup (grenadine is made of pomegranate juice), but Henry won't use
cough syrup!

(If you haven't already, go to the trash can by the double doors in the bar and
get the empty grenadine bottle.)

Leave him and go to Smuggler's End Pub.

===============================================================================
*** Smuggler's End Pub ***
Go down to the basement and look closely at the cask that is next to the door
to the tunnel - there is a spigot in it and you just happen to have an empty
glass in your inventory (or you should have). Fill the glass with dark rum from
the cask and "put" the cough syrup in your inventory into the empty grenadine
bottle.

(If you happen to notice - to the right of the door is a compass - broken. You
can pick it up now, but you'll get a strange comment from Hastings of "Another
compass!" - later on you will get a compass that you can use.)

Go back to the bar and Henry.

===============================================================================
*** Suntrap Bar ***
You will have to order the drink again, but this time when you offer the cough
syrup (in the grenadine bottle) and the glass of dark rum, he will take it and
make the drink for you.

Take it to George.

===============================================================================
*** Bathing Beach ***
Give George the drink and he goes off to do the dive for you.

- CUT-SCENE -

George dives a couple of times then comes up with a small glass bottle - empty.

Go to the sea tractor landing and call Will.

===============================================================================
*** Leatherecombe Bay ***
===============================================================================
Go to the garage, Adelaide's Store, Monk's Hood Pub and the Police Station.
===============================================================================
*** Will's Garage ***
Will is in the garage - talk to him - he will try to get a sailboat winch for
the metal receptacle in the wall.

Go to the Adelaide Hughes's store.

===============================================================================
*** Adelaide's Store - Chemist's Counter ***
Adelaide Hughes is at the Chemist's counter - talk to her.

Use the test equipment to test the things you've collected - open up the book
on the counter.

Stick pin from Linda Marshall's hat - click on "Oils and Waxes"
Candle Wax
Sample from Blatt's suitcase - click on "Oils and Waxes"
Gun Oil
Smashed bottle from cave - click on "Cosmetics"
Perfume
Unmarked bottle from Arlena's bathroom - click on "Cosmetics"
Hair Dye
Coffee flack from beach - click on "Drugs"
Trional
Chicken feathers from Monastery Ruin - click on "Blood"
Chicken Blood
Empty bottle thrown into sea - click on "Cosmetics"
Artificial Suntan

Next, put the burned hair from Linda's fireplace and the hair you got from
Arlena's brush under the microscope to compare them.

Go to the Post Office counter.

===============================================================================
*** Adelaide's Store - Post Office Counter ***
Send telegrams to:

Miss Porter, Miss Porter's School for Young Ladies, Brixham

Barkett & Applegood, Solicitors, Bedford Square, London

Now, go to the Monk's Hood Pub.

===============================================================================
*** Monk's Hood Pub ***
Go to the end of the pub where the tables are - Blatt is there - talk to him.

The life ring buoy that Patrick retrieved was from his boat and he hasn't been
able to replace it - go to the dartboard and click on the scoreboard this will
challenge Albert to a game of darts.

OPTIONS:
Correct choice: I will play you for the Life Ring Buoy hanging on your wall.

Give the buoy to Blatt -

OPTIONS:
Correct response: Do you have the compass I might borrow?

(That is the correct response because the compass is what you need from him,
but after you ask for the compass, ask if he has a winch you can borrow, too.
It's necessary to trigger a conversation between Poirot and Hastings that will
bring about another conversation with someone else later.)

Leave the pub and go to the Police Station.

===============================================================================
*** Police Station ***
Go to Weston's office - talk to him.

He will give you the report on North and the Alice Corrigan murder. They will
go into the Document section of your Notebook for you to examine.

Finish talking to Weston and go back to the garage - get Will to take you back
to the island.

===============================================================================
*** Seadrift Island ***
Inside hotel - go to the balcony area outside the rooms.
===============================================================================
*** Balcony Area ***
This is where Gladys spends most of her time - find her.

*** Gladys and the Strength Test ***
Hastings doesn't believe that any woman has the strength to strangle someone.
He will get Poirot to give Gladys one of the bottles that you have collected to
attempt to open - when she can't, he gets Poirot to ask her to try to get one
of the other women to open it.

OPTIONS:
Correct response: Actually, you can choose any name from the list.

You will need to "walk" around for awhile. If you are gone long enough, she has
taken it on herself to get all of the women to try to open the bottle - the
only successful one: Emily Brewster.

(I found that if I went up to the Tower and looked with the binoculars in all
four directions then went down and across to the other hallway off the balcony
[on the side of the balcony opposite where I found Gladys], out the door to the
veranda on the left, down the outside stairs, back in through the side door and
back upstairs to where I found Gladys was plenty of time.)

Once you've learned the results of her test, this will trigger the end of the
Act 5 - fade to Poirot's flat in London.

===============================================================================
Act 6 - London, September 7, 1940
===============================================================================

Poirot tells you that you need to identify and remove the "red herrings" and he
will cover the moments that he considered most important. Some of these points
will involve options in your choice of answers.

Click on Hastings' picture to go back to the island.

Your sixth clue to the Finger of Suspicion - TELEPHONE.

===============================================================================
Seadrift Island - August 25, 1940, Afternoon
===============================================================================
Inside hotel - go to Hotel Office, balcony outside rooms, Kenneth Marshall's
room, Horace Blatt's room and the Suntrap Bar.
===============================================================================
*** Hotel Office ***
When you get back to Poirot's room, he says that it is time to go and remove
the evidence against Mrs. Castle that she has in her safe before she destroys
it.

Go to the safe and remove the code book and the German radio - the signal lamp
is already missing.

Go upstairs to find Gladys.

===============================================================================
*** Balcony Outside Rooms ***
Find Gladys up here and get her evidence.

When you've finished talking to Gladys go into Kenneth Marshall's room.

===============================================================================
*** Kenneth Marshall's Room ***
This time look around and find the letters received in that morning's post and
the responses that he was typing. These letters along with the corroborating
evidence of Gladys convince you that Marshall did not have enough time to get
to Cutter's Cove and commit the murder.

Go to Horace Blatt's room.

===============================================================================
*** Horace Blatt's Room ***
Look in suitcase again - this time you find his gun - take it, but Blatt comes
in and insists that you return it since the murder wasn't committed with a gun.

Leave Blatt and go to the Suntrap Bar.

===============================================================================
*** Suntrap Bar ***
Patrick Redfern is in the bar - talk to him, completely. He will mention Jimmy
Nash - J.N.?

When you're finished with Patrick, talk to Henry about his movements.

When you're done, go to the sea tractor landing - Stephen Lane is there - talk
to him about his movements, then call Will to pick you up and take you across
to Leathercombe Bay.

===============================================================================
*** Leathercombe Bay ***
===============================================================================
Go to Will's garage, Adelaide's Store and the Police Station.
===============================================================================
*** Will's Garage ***
Major Barry is there - talk to him about his movements.

Will comes in just as you finish with Barry and gives you the winch handle.

Go to Adelaide's Store.

===============================================================================
*** Adelaide's Store - Post Office Counter ***
Get the responses to your telegrams that you sent - a telegram from Arlena's
solicitors (read it in the Documents section of your notebook) and a package
from Miss Porter at the Porter School for Girls (this is in your inventory -
double-click on the package to "look" at and "open" it up then click on the
Magnifying Glass Button to remove the contents. You'll have to go back to the
inventory and double-click on the contents then click on the Magnifying Glass
Button again to read the information cards on the four girls that were kicked
out of the school.

The girls names, birthdates and astrological signs - oldest to youngest
Linda Marshall - November 28, 1927 - Sagittarius
Doris Clappendon - December 13, 1927 - Sagittarius
Virginia Price-Waverly January 3, 1928 - Capricorn
Estella Haversham - April 15, 1928 - Aries

Go to the Police Station.

===============================================================================
*** Police Station ***
Go to Weston's office - talk to him.

He will give you the background checks of the suspects - read it later in the
Documents section of your Notebook.

Go back to Will's garage and get him to take you back to the island.

===============================================================================
*** Seadrift Island ***
===============================================================================
Outside hotel - go to Bathing Beach, Cutter's Cove, tunnel from Cutter's Cove
to Monastery Ruins, tunnel from Cutter's Cove to Smuggler's End Pub.
Inside hotel - go to Linda Marshall's room.
Outside hotel - go to Monastery Ruin.
===============================================================================
*** Bathing Beach ***
Go to the water's edge and find Emily Brewster - ask her to row you to Cutter's
Cove.

===============================================================================
*** Cutter's Cove ***
Go to Cutter's Cave - the first thing you will notice is a pile of seaweed on
the rocks that wasn't there before - pick it up.

There is a sandwich tin hidden there - pick it up and look closely at it - it's
full of little packets of white powder - click on the Magnifying Glass Button
to remove one of the packets.

Use the winch handle in the receptacle on the wall - a door into more tunnels
opens up.

Poirot has Blatt's compass now, so he will go in to explore.

===============================================================================
*** Tunnel from Cutter's Cove to the Monastery Ruins ***
Go into the tunnel and when you come to the fork, go to the left. You will soon
recognize the things you saw when you entered from the Monastery Ruins.

Poirot will mention that this would be a good point to use the stopwatch to
measure the time it would take to go from the Monastery Ruins to Cutter's Cove
by the tunnel- click on the stopwatch and do Timing Number 7 - Monastery Ruin
to Cutter's Cove by tunnel.

Go back to the fork in the tunnel - this time go right.

===============================================================================
*** Tunnel from Cutter's Cove to Smuggler's End Pub ***
===============================================================================
Follow the right fork of the tunnel and you'll soon come to the basement of the
pub.

Poirot will mention that this would be a good point to use the stopwatch to
measure the time it would take to go from Smuggler's End Pub to Cutter's Cove
by the tunnel- click on the stopwatch and do Timing Number 8 - Smuggler's End
Pub to Cutter's Cove by tunnel.

This is the last timing that you will have to do.

Leave the tunnels through the pub (don't worry about Emily, she will find her
own way back) - if you didn't see and pick it up before, you should find a
broken compass lying on the floor of the basement next to the tunnel door.

Go back to the hotel and up to Linda Marshall's room.

===============================================================================
*** Linda Marshall's Room ***
Open up Linda's puzzle box using the zodiac symbols from the birthdates of the
four friends - oldest to the youngest.

Click on outer ring - Sagittarius - 8 clicks
Click on second ring - Sagittarius - 4 clicks
Click on third ring - Capricorn - 9 clicks
Inner ring - Aries - already in place - you don't need to move it

When the box is open, take the book, "Voodoo for the Serious Practioner" and
the key.

There is one locked door that you came across way back at the beginning of this
mystery and never got unlocked - though you've probably forgotten about it -
the monk's door at the Monastery Ruin.

Go there now (use the tunnel).

===============================================================================
*** Monastery Ruin ***
Go to the door to the right of the opening into the ruin that you pulled back
the vines to uncover - use the key.

Take Mrs. Castle's wire recorder.

Now you need to go to Adelaide's Store to test that powder you found - go to
the sea tractor landing (use the tunnel again) and call Will.

===============================================================================
*** Leathercombe Bay ***
===============================================================================
Go to Adelaide's Store.
===============================================================================
*** Adelaide's Store - Chemist's Counter ***
Go to the Chemist's Counter and click twice on the book behind Adelaide to move
in close and open it.

Click the packet of powder on a test tube then on "Drugs" in the Table of
Contents - the test is performed - heroin!

Once the test is done, the scene fades back to Seadrift Island and Kenneth
Marshall is knocking on Linda's door - she doesn't answer.

He goes in and finds her unconcious - she's taken Trional!

This triggers the end of Act 6 - fade to Poirot's flat in London.

===============================================================================
Act 7 - London, September 7, 1940
===============================================================================

She was saved!

Poirot advises you to speak to her as soon as you return. Someone has lied and
someone has told a lie believing it to be the truth.

Before you can solve the murder mystery, you must catch the heroin smuggler's.

*** Who do you believe the smugglers are?
Answers: North - no birdwatcher
Horace Blatt.

*** What are the clues to their plan?
Answer: Color of Blatt's sails.

*** Sails signify?
Answers: Red tells North to wait.
White tells him the heroin is ready to pick up.

Assume the heroin is still in the cave and the safest route is back through
the tunnels -

*** What do you have that Blatt needs?
Answer: The compass!

*** How can you use the compass to stop Blatt?
Answer: Throw it off with the sliver of magnetic metal that came off
the spanner in the garage.

Go over the clues to the Finger of Suspicion and select your interpretation
so far -

*** POWER
Answer: The thing is powered by electricity.

*** LAMP
Answer: The Finger of Suspicion is powered by the same circuit as the
lamp.

*** DESK
Answer: The wires from the lamp to the Finger of Suspicion are in the
desk.

*** DRAWER
Answer: You close the drawer everytime you operate the Finger of
Suspicion - closes the circuit to switch it on.

*** MAGNET
Answer: The finger is controlled by a magnet you hold.

*** TELEPHONE
Answer: The telephone is disconnected. Only to the outside line, but it
is connected to the Finger of Suspicion.

Your seventh clue to the Finger of Suspicion - CODE.
The code is entered on the telephone.

===============================================================================
Seadrift Island - August 25, 1940, Late Afternoon
===============================================================================
Inside hotel - go to Linda Marshall's room and the Suntrap Bar.
Outside hotel - go to Smuggler's End Pub, the tunnel from the pub to Cutter's
Cove and back to the pub.
===============================================================================
*** Linda Marshall's Room ***
Go to Linda's room and talk to her about everything - her dislike of Arlena,
the decision of her and her friends to use voodoo to dispense their own kind of
justice because they believed that he had killed Millie Parsons, her writing
the threatening letters to Arlena and taking Rosamund's typewriter and hiding
it in the Redfern's room to throw suspicion on Christine, her performing the
voodoo ritual using a doll representing Arlena and trying to kill herself with
Trional because she thought her ritual was to blame for what happened.

Poirot will go over all of the things that he found in her room - the book, and
key from her puzzle box, the stick pin with wax on it from her hat and the
burned hair and the piece of burned, green material from her fireplace.

She admits to everything except the piece of material - she never used any kind
of material in her ritual.

Leave Linda and start for the bar - first disable Blatt's compass. Take the
sliver of metal and "use" it on the compass to make a "disabled" compass.

===============================================================================
*** Suntrap Bar ***
Find Blatt at the piano - talk to him and return his "disabled" compass.

Time to set the rest of the trap - go to Smuggler's End Pub and down to the
basement.

===============================================================================
*** Tunnel to Cutter's Cove ***
Take the tunnel to Cutter's Cave - Poirot will go this way even though you've
returned the compass - replace the sandwich tin and cover it back up with the
seaweed.

The trap is set, so go back to the sea tractor landing - back through the way
you came - and call Will to pick you up.

===============================================================================
*** Leathercombe Bay ***
===============================================================================
Go to Will's garage and the Police Station.
===============================================================================
*** Will's Garage ***
Find Will in his garage and talk to him.

He will tell you that one of the guests (won't say who) is paying him 10 quid
to help play a little joke on someone.

He is to wait in his boat for a signal from the Tower Room then pick up the
guest at Cutter's Cove and take him to Thurlestone.

For another 5 quid from you he will tell you the signal is 3 short flashes -
one of the signals from the code book - pick up at high tide (explains missing
lantern).

Tell him that he has to tell his "friend" that he needs to change the signal
because 3 short flashes is the Home Guard code for "enemy has been sighted".
Tell him -

OPTION:
Correct choice: 3 long flashes

is the code for "no enemy ships sighted". It actually means - "fire on this
position".

When you've finished talking to Will go to the Police Station.

===============================================================================
*** Police Station ***
Go to Weston's office and talk to him about Mrs. Castle, Gideon Fell and Jimmy
Nash then ask him for help springing the trap at Cutter's Cave.

The scene will fade out and you will find yourself and Weston already on the
island. "Recommend" that he takes the ladder down to Cutter's Cove to prevent
escape that way and you'll get Emily Brewster to row you over there.

===============================================================================
*** Cutter's Cove ***
Weston is at the ladder - go to the cave and he will follow. The sandwich tin
is gone.

Go into the tunnel and you'll soon run into Blatt and North discussing their
predicament. When Blatt sees you, he realizes they've been trapped.

The capture of Blatt and North will trigger the end of Act 7 - fade to Poirot's
flat in London.

===============================================================================
Act 8 - Starts Automatically
===============================================================================
Seadrift Island - August 25, 1940, Evening
===============================================================================

Poirot wants to know if you will do the presentation on your own or would you
prefer his help - your choice. Everyone is gathered in the Dining Room.

First order of business -
Tell the group that Mrs. Castle is a fifth columnist and has fled the
island.

Second order of business -
Tell them that Horace Blatt and a day-tripper named North have been
arrested for drug smuggling.

Now, time to cover the clues to Arlena's murder -

1. Two perfume bottles - Arlena's still in her room, the second found smashed
in Cutter's Cave - why would she need two?

2. Three pieces of green fabric - one, a piece of fine silk cut from her hat.
The other two, inexpertly dyed, rayon fabric, torn and one left on a rock
at the cove and the other burned in Linda's fireplace.

3. A bottle thrown into the sea and nearly striking Emily Brewster as she was
swimming - retrieved and found to have contained artificial suntan.

4. Trional in Arlena's coffee flask.

5. A mysterious bath late in the afternoon that no one admitted to taking.

The reason for two perfume bottles and the bath to remove the artificial suntan
that someone had applied even though the sun shines brightly and an artificial
tan would not, normally, be necessary - someone wanted to impersonate Arlena.

The reason they wanted to impersonate Arlena - to provide an alibi for the
murderer.

Only one person could have gone to the cove during the time the murder was
committed - Rosamund Darnley.

But the method of murder, strangulation, eliminates her.

Only one woman on the island physically capable of strangulation murder -
Emily Brewster. All other women are eliminated.

The murderer of Alice Corrigan and Arlena Marshall are one and the same -
knows this because both involve an "unbreakable" alibi - an alibi based solely
on time.

The liar and impersonator is...
I'll leave that for you to figure out.

There are a couple of other points -

The proof of why Arlena was killed was in two documents -
The telegram from Arlena's solicitors.
The letter from J.N.

What do we see from these two letters...
I'll leave this for you to figure out, too.

The solution of the murder triggers a very interesting cut-scene - you will
need to make a trip up to the Tower Room one last time though.

And, answer one last question about the signal lantern.
I told young Mr. Jenks the lie.

Congratulations, you have solved the murder of Arlena Marshall, but there is
still one more mystery to solve - the Finger of Suspicion.

Once again fade to Poirot's flat in London.

Poirot wants to know if you have figured out the code that activates the
Finger of Suspicion.

At the beginning, Poirot told you that he got the device from a "wizard from
Manchester". While you were looking around his office, you should have looked
at a book sitting on top of a cupboard.

The title of the book: "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" by William Henry Nicholls -
An Account of My Life, Times and Mechanical Contrivances Built for the WIZARDS
of the World.

The handwritten message to Poirot on the inside cover says - "Thank you for
extricating me from that messy misunderstanding in MANCHESTER".

And it's signed - "From one GENIUS to another".

Click on the telephone and dial in the numbers that correspond to the letters
G - E - N - I - U - S (4-3-6-4-8-7).

Congratulations, second mystery solved!
